Box Parish Council administers its own
cemetery which is situated on the Bath Road just 100 metres outside
the village on the west side. Box is situated midway between Bath and Chippenham, which are approximately 5 miles away.
The cemetery is open from around 9am until ‘dusk’ and the chapel is
open most days, especially when the book of remembrance is topical.
Inside the chapel is an ‘In Memorium’ board to which people can affix
plates commemorating lives of loved ones. (for details contact the
council clerk).
The Council has rules which apply to the cemetery for keeping it neat,
tidy and easy to maintain. We ask visitors to observe these rules
which are displayed at the cemetery entrance. . See the RULES section
on this site and/or contact the Clerk for more information.
This section of the web site is intended to give the reader some idea of the facilities available at the cemetery.
The Council realises that in most cases, the reader is likely to have suffered the loss of a loved one and we offer our condolences.
However, inevitably, this loss means that certain arrangements have to be made, often during a time when it is difficult to cope with such matters.
Mourners in many cases turn to funeral directors (undertakers) and monumental masons to make these arrangements on their behalf.
Never the less, the Parish Council will communicate with anyone on matters pertaining to the facilities at the cemetery. (see advice from the Office of Fair Trading,
reproduced here in this section)
The cemetery is available to anyone and is non denominational.
Unavoidably, to ensure the smooth running of the cemetery and in order to maintain its rural and open appearance, the Council finds it necessary to
regulate its use through rules and regulations. We understand that at this time
of grief, such matters are sometimes overlooked. Regretfully, on occasions, it falls to the Council to enforce these rules which sometimes causes distress.
To avoid this, we include here a copy of our rules and practices for your information.
Readers may wish to
know that the burial registers (dating back to around 1850), have been
transcribed and placed on a computer database. Anyone wishing to
obtain details or perhaps make a search, should email the Parish Clerk.
The original registers have been lodged with the :
Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre,
Cocklebury Road, Chippenham, Wiltshire. SN15 3QN
http://www.wshc.eu/ and heritageadmin@wiltshire.gov.uk
NB. The historical records of St. Thomas a Becket (C of E) church are also there.
