CEMETERY RULES (with effect from 1st April 2002 - but may change from time to time) |

1. MEMORIALS PERMITTED a) To reduce maintenance costs, and safety risks; only headstones conforming to the council’s specifications may be erected in the Cemetery.b) No erection of a headstone (or replacement), or the laying of a memorial tablet (or replacement), or the making of any additional inscription on either, is to be carried out without the prior written permission of the Parish Council.c) Concrete, or any stone which is liable to crumble under the action of weather, is not permitted for a headstone.d) No headstone is to be erected until six months after the interment.e) All NEW memorials are to consist of a headstone made of an upright, single plate (Monolith), in natural hard stone, set directly into the ground. This headstone will be installed by burying at least 25% of its height.f) The maximum height of the visible part of the headstone is 900mm (3 ft). The maximum width is 760mm (2' 6"). The minimum thickness must be 75mm (3"); maximum thickness 100mm (4")g) Only the replacement of 'lawn' memorials will be permitted.h) All memorials (including replacements) erected in the cemetery will be installed in accordance with the standards laid down by the National Association of Memorial Masons (NAMM) in existence at the time of installation.i) Kerbstones on new graves are not permitted.j) All memorials must be engraved (or otherwise permanently marked), with the appropriate grave code number supplied by the council.k) Details of ALL new memorials, or changes to existing ones, including inscriptions, are to be submitted to Box Parish Council for approval before installation.2. CONTAINERS, VASES, FLOWERS. a) In addition, a separate facility may be provided for the purpose of accommodating flower vases. It must be installed independently to the headstone in accordance with the following criteria.b) i) The construction of the flower vase holder must be of the same material as the headstone.ii) It must be a minimum of 117mm (6 inches) wide, by 117mm (6 inches) long, by 112mm (4 inches) deep; and a maximum of 178mm (7 inches) wide by 178mm (7 inches) long, by 178mm (7 inches) deep. iii) This flower vase holder must be placed on top of a concrete plinth directly in front of the headstone. This plinth must be a maximum of 230mm (9 inches) long by 230mm (9 inches) wide by 50mm (2 inches) deep. iv) The plinth must be recessed into the soil so that the upper surface is just below the surrounding ground level. v) A maximum of TWO of these vase facilities may be installed against any one headstone. c) Additional flower vases/containers are not permitted.d) Flowers, shrubs or other plants, must not be planted in a gravespace and will be removed by the Council.e) As a general rule, artificial flowers are not permitted in the cemetery. However, artificial flowers which are of good quality, in good condition and compatible with the season at the time, will be permitted at the discretion of the council.f) Any unauthorised objects; dead flowers or unsuitable artificial flowers; may be removed at any time at the discretion of the council.g) The grave will be levelled and grassed over by the council sometime after settlement has taken place (normally after 6 months.)3. GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE a) No memorials, nor vases or other objects etc. are permitted in the Garden of Remembrance (Scattered remains area). However, the laying of cut flowers is permitted.4. CREMATED REMAINS SECTION a) No memorial is to be installed, nor changes made to an existing one, without prior written permission of the Parish Council.b) Only horizontal, splayed tablets are permitted. The size of this tablet must be 18" (450 mm) by 12" (300 mm).c) If required, a facility for incorporating a maximum of two flower vases may be incorporated within this tablet.d) The tablet must be supported on a base. This base must be 24" (600 mm) by 18" (450 mm).e) The top of this base must be just below the level of the ground immediately surrounding it.f) All memorials are to be engraved (or otherwise permanently marked), with the appropriate grave code number supplied by the council.g) Memorial tablets may be placed without delay after an interment.5. COLUMBARIUM (Cremated Remains) a) No memorial is to be installed, nor changes made to an existing one, without prior written permission of the Parish Council.b) Only horizontal, splayed tablets are permitted. The size of this tablet must be 500 mm (18") by 300 mm (12") by 100mm (4") thickc) If required, a facility for incorporating a maximum of two flower vases may be incorporated within this tablet.d) The tablet must be installed centrally on the cover provided by the Council.e) All memorials are to be engraved (or otherwise permanently marked), with the appropriate grave code number supplied by the council.f) Memorial tablets may be placed without delay after an interment.g) No other object(s) may be placed in, on, or around the Columbarium.6. DOGS Dogs will only be permitted into the cemetery as far as the notice board where a cleat is available for the tethering of dogs. (Guide dogs are excepted). 7. ALCOHOL No alcohol will be permitted anywhere in the cemetery. 8. ENFORCEMENT OF RULES The Parish Council expects everyone to comply with these rules, and reserves the right to vary them as and when it deems to be necessary. The Council will also remove any item or rectify any situation which it believes is contrary to the rules of the cemetery at the time or is a matter of safety. |
