BOX ARCHAEOLOGICAL & NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY
The Society was formed in 1969 following an excavation of the Romano-British structures under the village. Recently it formed KOBRA (Knowledge of Box Roman Archaeology) to correlate all existing knowledge of the Roman ruins in Box.
During the summer we arrange outings to places of interest by car and coach. In September we have a weekend away. Recent weekends have been to Stafford, North Wales, Norfolk, Tenby and Chester.
In the winter (October to March) we have talks on a variety of subjects. Meetings are held in the Methodist Hall, Box on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, commencing at 7.30pm. Except for the December meeting which is held in the Box Pavilion (opposite the Selwyn Hall) on the 2nd Tuesday.
The Society aims to foster interest in Archaeology, History and the Natural History of our area. |

OUR WINTER PROGRAMME FOR 2011/12 IS AS FOLLOWS:
TUESDAY 18th OCTOBER 2011
MARK CORNEY on “NEWS FROM THE FRONTIER” (New work and thoughts on HADRIAN’S WALL)
In the last decade new archaeological research has produced a wealth of new material that has challenged many of the long established views on the function of the wall. Mark will show us new geophysical images and aerial views of the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.
************** TUESDAY 15th NOVEMBER 2011
“THE INNS OF WILTSHIRE”
KIRSTEN ELLIOTT and ANDREW SWIFT
will discuss the history of inns in our county, with particular reference to some close to home, and how they contributed to society. They will also give some insight into how they conducted their research. Members will be asked to identify a “mystery” inn.
************** TUESDAY 13th DECEMBER 2011
CERI LAMBDIN on “THE LOST ROMAN VILLA of PAULTON”
Until Ceri undertook research, little was known about the villa and its exact location. This research and fieldwork produced amazing results.
****************************
TUESDAY 17th JANUARY 2012
“DEEDS NOT WORDS: THE BLATHWAYT FAMILY and the SUFFRAGETTES in BATHEASTON”
JUNE HANNAM will tell the story of suffragettes in Bath & Batheaston through the activities of the Blathwayt family of Eagle House. June uses diaries and photographs to show the many different ways both women and men contributed to the militant campaign.
**************
TUESDAY 21st FEBRUARY 2012
“FLOWERS of the COTSWOLDS – Remedies, myths and legends”
SUE SMITH will talk about how some of the plants are used in folk medicine, some of the myths which have grown up around them, be they local or Greek(!) and other related snippets of information that have been collected along the way. It will include just a selection of the many common plants found locally. **************
TUESDAY 20th MARCH 2012
“CHEW BEFORE the LAKE”
LESLEY ROSS will give a presentation, describing the valley before it was flooded, based on oral memories, explaining why the lake was created and will discuss the archaeological finds discovered. Some of the artefacts will be on display.
