RE-CYCLING IN BOX
(a Question and Answer session)

last updated on 18th September 2005

So what's all the fuss about ?
North Wiltshire District Council are introducing 'Kerbside' recycling on the 22nd of September using a single large black box per household in their area, and that includes BOX.
Hills Recycling will perform this task on behalf of Wiltshire County Council and N.W.D.C.

Will everyone get one of these boxes ?
Ah.... The vast majority (98%) will get one.  Some won't because they are too remote OR difficult to get to (like narrow lanes and roads).  Obviously it's NOT compulsory to keep the box.  If you don't want to re-cycle, don't put the box out - but it's not community spirited is it ?

When's that happening then?
The boxes are in the process of being delivered and the first collection will be on the 22nd September.

Great - I'll start collecting now then!
Please don't do that. If there is a lot to collect in the first few weeks, the collectors will be overloaded and delayed until following days. The public will lose confidence in the system and confusion will reign!

Why should I Recycle?
Well, we as a nation are very poor at recycling compared to our European cousins. Not only that, a lot of the U.K. is doing this already.

So what, what has that to do with me?
We can't go on this way, we need to reduce AND recycle about half of our rubbish.

I say again, why?  We have managed in the past, why change now?
There are a number of reasons.
Firstly, the planet has a finite number of resources and unless we re-use some of it, these will run out much sooner.
Secondly, we have to stop burying our rubbish. No-one wants these landfills - they are unsightly, smelly and possibly dangerous long-term. Anyway - it's wasteful!.  Not only that, but to discourage this practice, the Government makes Local Authorities pay a 'landfill tax' to persuade them not to do it.  That means you pay through the 'Rates'.

Does this mean an eventual reduction in the Rates I pay ??
Ask your District Councillor !!

OK, so how is this kerbside re-cycling going to help ?
Well we realise that currently, recycling often means jumping in the car with all your papers etc. in the boot and
taking it to either a local mini-recycling point or driving 10 miles to the Household Recycling Centre, plainly a lot of people can't or won't do that.
Secondly, it's not exactly environmentally friendly to cause that pollution in the cause of re-cycling. So the Council will collect suitable items from outside your front door.  It's easier all round.

Ok - so how does it work ?
You will be given a large black box like the one shown here.

Every OTHER week you put your recyclable items in the box next to your 'wheelie bin'.
(if your bin is collected on another day - put the box where you normally put your bin!)
By the end of the day, your wheelie bin will be emptied as normal and the recycling stuff will be collected as well, but by another team of people in another vehicle.

How will I remember to do that?
You will get used to it eventually, but we will give you a calendar to start off with.
To help you, the Box Parish Website will also list these dates if you forget.  The Parish Magazine may also have the list every month.

I suppose I have to go through all the performance of separating these bottles and things.
NO - this is done at the depot.

Great, so that's all then?
Well not exactly!

What's the catch then?
Well we would like you to help us a bit.  Keep the contents of your box to as low a mass as possible.  This means squashing the tins as flat as you can, fold the newspapers into a neat pile. Additionally, please
rinse out the cans, bottles and jars.

OK - so what exactly is re-cyclable (is that a word)?
Please stick to this list for kerbside collections  : -

bullet newspaper, magazines, catalogues, junk mail, white printer paper
bullet glass bottles and jars
bullet all food and drinks cans
bullet textiles, clothes, pairs of shoes, leather belts/handbags, blankets
bullet clean aluminium foil e.g. yoghurt tops, take away food containers

bullet plastic bottles
bullet cardboard, envelopes, Yellow Pages
bullet flat or broken glass
bullet duvets, pillows
bullet shiny metallic plastic e.g. crisp & peanut packets

So what do I do with the 'no thank you' stuff?

Two things really.  Firstly you could put the small items in your 'wheelie bin' as rubbish.  However, it would be better to save up the CARDBOARD, PLASTIC BOTTLES, WOOD, METAL, RUBBLE etc. and take it to the Household Recycling Centre and re-cycle them there.

By the way - Where is this Household Recycling Centre you talk about?
The nearest one for Box is at
Stanton St Quintin near Chippenham.  That's near M4 junction 17.  Once you get to the roundabout, take the Lyneham Road.  It's about half a mile.  Details can be found on the HILLS website - see the bottom of this page.  There is another one at Bowerhill, Melsham on the road to Devizes if you are going that way.

What about those pesky supermarket bags?
If you have to have them, (it would be better to use a 'shopping' bag)  - then save them!

What? You cannot be serious !!
Keep them for when your items won't fit in the box - they are mentioned a bit later. If you get too many, line your waste bins in the house.  Keeps them clean and makes it easier to put your rubbish in your wheelie bin!

What about the rest of the "no thank you's"?
If you can get them in the car, you can take anything to the Household Recycling Centre really.  And there's no charge except the cost of your time and petrol.  They will take virtually ANYTHING there!  Failing that, NWDC will take away large items from your house.  But there is a charge for this and they can't always guarantee when it will be collected.

Right - Tell me more !

  • Kerbside collections will take place fortnightly. (but your rubbish is still collected every week by the way!)
  • Please put your box at the kerbside by 7am on collection day
  • Place the box on the kerbside where you normally put your wheelie bin or rubbish bags
  • Put paper upright in the box alongside bottles, cans and foil (please wash cans out thoroughly)
  • Fold up clean foil (if it stays scrunched - up its foil; if it bounces back when scrunched - its plastic)
  • Put dry textiles in a separate, knotted carrier/supermarket bag in or alongside the box (don't put out on wet days)
  • If your box is too full, put paper in separate open carrier bags next to the box
  • Re-use carrier bags rather than use black plastic sacks
  • Do not tie bags other than those containing textiles
  • Any materials not shown in our ‘yes’ list cannot be collected and dirty food cans or foil will not be taken

What about bank holidays?
There will be no kerbside collections on Bank Holiday Mondays. Your collection will be one day later in these weeks, with Friday collections being made on Saturdays.  Again  - refer to this website.

What about Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day?
We will collect on Good Friday, but if you are uncertain, check the NEWS or CALENDAR page in this RECYCLING section. It will report any day changes.

What else can I do?

The best way to reduce rubbish is not to create it in the first place. You can reduce your rubbish by avoiding excessively packaged goods, opting for supermarket “bags for life” and choosing re-useable containers. Charities in particular benefit from old toys, clothes and other household goods.

You can also sign up to the MAIL PREFERENCE SERVICE (MPS).  They stop junk mail being delivered to your house.  (It also stops the postman getting a hernia!).  See the details at the bottom of this page.

What about all those potato peelings, pea pods, tea bags and the like.
Compost them!  You would be surprised how easy that is.  You can also greatly reduce what goes into your bin by creating a home compost heap from kitchen and garden rubbish and returning the resulting goodness to your garden.
Or you can take your green garden rubbish to the Household Recycling Centre.  They take it away and bring it back as compost which you can buy at a cheap price.  100% recycling !!
Telephone
0845 073 2002
and they will deliver a plastic composting bin to your house.  You have to pay for it, but it's heavily subsidised and you end up with all that free compost for your garden, (the cheapest is only £5). The ultimate re-cycling!

There is a section of this website on the subject of COMPOSTING.

What happens to the items I put out for collection?
All the materials put out for collection will be taken to Hills Materials Recovery Facility at Compton Bassett, where items are sorted (if necessary) and baled before being transported to recycling processing plants.

Paper goes to Aylesford Newsprint in Kent where it comes back out again as today's newspaper.
Glass goes to Berryman, South Kirkby, they turn it back into glass objects again.  Glass can be recycled over and over again.
Steel cans go to Corus (formerly British Steel) in South Wales where it is turned into girders, aeroplanes, cans etc.
Aluminium cans go to Alcan in Warrington where they make more cans.
Aluminium foil is reprocessed by Alupro back into foil again via the Middlefield Centre in Chippenham.
Textiles go to Devizes Textiles where some go to charity shops, some go to Africa

I have had a party! Can I have an extra box for the bottles?
SORRY ! - it is not possible to provide households with more than one box.

What if I have more items than the box will hold ?
If you have more items than will fit into your box please put the extra stuff into used carrier bags. Remember I mentioned this earlier. But please put each type of material into separate bags.  Put them with your box on the kerbside.
And by the way - please make sure you put the lid on the box. It keeps the paper from blowing about and the rain getting in and making it soggy!

What happens if I miss a collection?
You can either take the items to your nearest Hills Recycling Centre, or store the items until the next collection day.

So will the recycling containers in the Selwyn Hall car park go?
We don't know yet.  In theory they will be redundant.  If they do stay, obviously they will be emptied far less often.
